Maurice w/ Graphics & a Light Sleeper

Hideout, Chicago, IL

TUESDAY, MAY 03, 2022 Show: 9:30pm // Doors: 9pm $12 Hideout Chicago a Light Sleeper

Chicago’s a Light Sleeper is an ever-evolving quartet exploring collaborative composition from the bottom up, featuring breezy intertwining melodies from saxophonist Maria Elena Hernandez and violist Traci Newhouse, D. Pennepalli’s idiosyncratic guitar lines, and drummer Matthew Jung’s graceful clockwork core.

Maurice

The Chicago-based ensemble named Maurice was founded in 2007 by David Grant (keyboard), John Carroll (drums), and Paul Williams (bass) to rethink the musical conversations the members had while studying composition. When Grant’s friends and fellow composers from Northwestern University, Lee Weisert (guitar) and Jonathon Kirk (trombone), joined the band, Maurice became a more serious outlet for exploring compositional ideas.

With Maurice’s current lineup (Corey McCafferty on drums, Moses Aguilar on guitar, Tim Edwards on bass and original members David Grant, Jonathon Kirk and James Davis ) they have maintained a consistent sound and musical goal: to fuse the irregular grooves and rhythmic structure of composers like Stravinsky with the harmonies of jazz, the squibness of Erik Satie, and the energy and spirit of rock and experimental music.

Instrumental rock quartet. Lots of changes. The word “angular.”
