Featuring a unique and beautifully lush instrumentation, BEVELED's overall sound leans towards a gentle and dark side of jazz and improvised music. While challenging the traditional roles of the instruments involved, Beveled stays tethered to a sensibility of tuneful and rhythmic audacity. The musicians in Beveled are actively involved in many facets of the Chicago music scene, leading and performing in other creative music collaborations. Live concerts features music from the album recorded and mixed by Anthony Gravino in June 2014, newer works, and arrangements of early 20th century French piano music.

James has recently recorded with many of Chicago's new projects including Matt Ulery's "By a Little Light", Grazyna Auguscik, Julie Meckler, LORIS, Jason Steele Messenger Collective, Bryant Scott's Great Postmodern Nightmare Big Band, and the Ian Torres Big Band.

Members of the ensemble lead many of their own groups and play in some of Chicago’s foremost Jazz groups including: Juan Pastor’s Chinchano, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, Chad McCullough’s Spin Quartet, M13, Michael Salter's Freakjar, as well as other ears&eyes records groups such as the James Davis Quintet, Zing!, and Tomorrow Music Orchestra.

In early March 2020, Beveled was able to get into the studio and record some new compositions just before the world was changed as we knew it.

"Remain Calm" attempts to capture some of the emotional undercurrent at the time, as we all started to navigate a new environment.

"Rothko Sketch 1" is a brief opportunity for reflection and re-centering.

"Waves of Dust" embraces the the cycle, the daily loop, and an acceptance of living in one's smaller world.

"Winter Song" weaves a tapestry of lightness and hope, finding a little room for play even in the dark and cold times.
